Phrasal verb to give up

This part of speech is really important. Some verbs can be used in partnership with an adverb or preposition to mean something else entirely.  So you cannot translate words individually(word by word)

Let's see what meaning has a verb

to give and preposition up.


For example

I'm sorry I disappointed you, but please do not give up on me.

Meaning- stop with something, surrender

Give up smoking, drinking

give up hope or your dreams

Opposite: to take up(start something)


!Give up on -you lost your patience

I am not giving you any money, I have given up on you


!give it up to/for=applaud(American English)

Please give it up to our next guest!!!


More examples:

OK, I give up, you win.

The boy gave up his seat to an old lady.

I can't believe you are giving up already!!!

Lucy gave up her career, because of her children.
